Tilley Lamps
Tilley Lamps
were produced around 1920 and were
manufactured by The Tilley Lamp &Accessories Co. at the Brent Works
Hendon London NW4.
The lamps were
manufactured to a revolutionary new design using a heated vapouriser to
spray paraffin vapour which is mixed with air and then burns inside a
mantle. The mantle then emits an incandescent light which will continue
whilst there is paraffin in the reservoir and it is under pressure.
The early lamps were generally
table types for use in the home but there were many other types added to
the range at later dates. All varieties were given a type number and this
was very often marked on the paraffin container
The
photograph shows a selection of lamps used for standing on a table as you
can see there are various different designs of base and indeed differing
heights.
These are but a few in my collection which
features many differing table, hanging lamps and industrial types. In
order to show our lamps to other collectors we have an annual “ Tilley
Convention” at my cottage situated in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.
